Practice two - Piquet prevents a McLaren one-two

Lewis Hamilton and Heikki Kovalainen dominated Friday’s second practice session here in Hungary this afternoon, until Nelson Piquet in the Renault split their McLarens right at the end. Running with both new and old nose designs, Hamilton set the pace all the way through, ending with a lap of 1m 20.554s with the MP4-23 in standard configuration.
Piquet pushed his R28 to a lap of 1m 20.748s, and then immediately spun in Turn One, while Kovalainen’s best was 1m 20.760s. Fernando Alonso was the only other man in the 1m 20s, with 1m 20.928s in the second Renault.
The Ferraris were not as sparkling this afternoon as they had seemed this morning, but they were pretty evenly matched with Kimi Raikkonen fifth on 1m 21.009s and Felipe Massa sixth on 1m 21.010s. Neither looked particularly happy afterwards.
Nick Heidfeld was seventh for BMW Sauber on 1m 21.138s, with team mate Robert Kubica eighth on 1m 21.363s. Then came Toyota’s Jarno Trulli (1m 21.505s), Williams’ Nico Rosberg (1m 21.581s), Toyota’s Timo Glock (1m 21.662s), the Red Bulls of Mark Webber (1m 21.733s) and David Coulthard (1m 21.837s), Williams’ Kazuki Nakajima (1m 21.902s) and Toro Rosso’s Sebastien Bourdais (1m 21.955s).
Jenson Button was 16th for Honda on 1m 22.150s, chased by the Force Indias of Giancarlo Fisichella (1m 22.197s) and Adrian Sutil (1m 22.358s), Honda team mate Rubens Barrichello (1m 22.448s) and the luckless Sebastian Vettel. The German lapped his Toro Rosso in 1m 22.945s before rolling to a halt in Turn Five, exactly where he stopped this morning.
There was more action this afternoon. Besides the spinning Piquet, Bourdais, Raikkonen, Nakajima, Sutil, Webber, Alonso and Glock all had off-course moments, Nakajima gently backing his Williams into a wall.
